Itchy - Scratchy - Rashy - Irritated - Swollen - Hivey - Bumpy - Sneezy - Snotty - Refluxy - Gutty

These are symptoms speak to an issues with histamines. As the immune system's mast cells get overactive, they indicate an immune system that is overloaded. Getting on top of this is key to feeling better. Naturopathy can help.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome

We are moving into a time when this condition is going to accelerate and be far-reaching through the body's systems, in my opinion. We are living in a time of bombardment from WIFI, mobile phones, smart meters, pesticides, food chain contamination with chemicals, polluted air, water containing chemicals, in-home or office use of cleaning chemicals, personal care products (perfume, deodorants, skin products, hair products.

I believe that MAST cell activation syndrome has a role to play in many inflammatory illnesses, from the gut, through the sinuses and respiratory system, reproductive system and skin.

Mast cells are a component of the immune system and are present in most tissues throughout the body. They are part of the body's immune response, designed to protect us from threats and injury.

When mast cells perceive a threat, they secrete a cascade of chemical messengers and signals to mobilise and activate the immune system to act. Although they have over 200 chemicals at their disposal, we are most aware of histamine, the trigger for allergic symptoms such as itching, swelling, rashes, mucus and tissue irritation.

As the problems of modernity have evolved to become all-pervasive, the body's immune system is overstimulated by perceived threats, which can cause hyper-reactivity of mast cells, and hypersensitivity to their attempts to help us.

Symptoms of overactive mast cells may include:

  • skin rashes/hives

  • swelling/edema

  • flushing

  • itching

  • abdominal pain

  • nausea/vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • wheezing

  • shortness of breath

  • heart palpitations

  • anxiety, difficulty concentrating

  • headaches

  • migraines

  • brain fog

  • low blood pressure

  • fatigue

  • fainting (POTS)

Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a condition symptoms involving the skin, mucosa, blood vessels, digestive system, bowel, heart, veins, lungs, brain, eyes, ears, nose and nervous systems.

This reaction is your body trying to protect you, but the system is overloaded and needs help to distinguish between friend and foe. Unburdening the system while undertaking gut repair and immune stabilisation can help regulate the body's surveillance system.
