Children's Health & Wellbeing

Our children need more active nutritional, dietary, health and lifestyle support now than at any other time in history. Just like 'Canaries in the coal mine', our kids are at the effect of an environment and food chain that leaves a lot to be desired in the support of health, growth and development.  A regular nutritional review is essential for every child, regardless of age.

Tweens - Teens - Adolescents

As children move into puberty and adolescence, this is the perfect time to support their hormonal development and maturation. Parents soon learn that as an adolescent's brain undergoes a process of remodelling, the centres responsible for planning, listening, and executive functioning disappear, leaving you with a moody, forgetful, foggy youth on your hands. This is the ideal time to give the brain the nutrients it is demanding in high quantities, and in doing so, you can influence the intelligence of your adult-to-be.

Common issues with tweens and teens include :

  • skin problems - acne, eczema, bumps, lumps, boils, cysts, skin tags, blackheads

  • mood swings

  • memory issues

  • motivation deficiency

  • sleep disturbances

  • sore ankles or knees

  • muscle aches

  • "growing pains"

  • headaches, migraines

  • menarche (first period), menstrual pain, heaviness, irregular periods

  • ovarian cysts

  • weight gain, obesity

  • hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, adrenal fatigue

  • bloating, tummy trouble, wind, flatulence ++++

  • constipation, diarrhoea, noisy tummy

  • immune depletion, frequent colds, flu

  • glandular fever, epsteine barr virus, cytomegalo virus

  • chronic fatigue

  • difficulty getting up, sleep problems

  • anxiety, depression, melancholy

  • low self esteem, low confidence

There is so much change afoot for these young adults and an abundant resources of nutrients are essential to make this time a strong opportunity for growth and development. With Australian soils being so depleted of minerals and other nutrients, and adolescence being more inclined to reach for fast food, soft drinks, caffeinated beverages and empty calories, nutritional guidance and support help to shore up their needs so their body's growth can be smooth, regulated and strong.

Regular nutritional and dietary check ins help make this transition as smooth as possible for parents and kids alike. Kids moving through this tenuous phase of life start to value the opinions of others over their parents, so having a good relationship with another adult who has their health and wellbeing at heart, can really help them make wiser choices about what they eat, drink, think and do.

Pyrrole disorder (also known as pyroluria, kryptopyroluria, kryptopyrole or Mauve disorder) is a biochemical imbalance involving an abnormality in haemoglobin synthesis, which affects the way the body makes available nutrients which are essential for many pathways in the body, most especially those affecting mood, nerve and brain function.

Pyrrole Disorder can lead to enhanced mental, emotional and physical stress, as it disrupts neurochemicals like serotonin (happy nerutoransmitter), melatonin (sleep and body clock), GABA (for relaxation and calm), and acetyl choline which is important for memory and protection of the nerves. Depletion of essential nutrients also lead to issues with the production of steroid hormones such as cortisol (anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy and stress regulation hormone) as well as the metabolism of oils in the body (affecting fat metabolism, liver and gall bladder function and weight control). Pyrrole itself is an oxidative free-radical, which can exert a toxic effect on the body, cells and nerves.

Pyroluria describes an abnormal synthesis and metabolism of the oxygen carrying molecule in the blood, haemoglobin. As with all cellular function in the body, there are by-products related to function, and the by-product of haemoglobin is a metabolite called hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one (HPL) also known as Pyrrole.

People who suffer from the abnormal handling of this molecule produce too much  of these bioactive HPL substances, which are then capable of binding to and inhibiing the essential function of nutrients, inhibiting function and over time causing symptoms.

When essential nutrients are bound up by HPL, and become unavailable to the body, all of the roles those nutrients would play in metabolism and function become effected. In children, adolescents and adults we are likely to notice behavioural, emotional (mood regulation) and learning issues. In adults and the elderly we may see greater cognitive impairment, sleep problems, immue issues and odd behaviour. Overall people affected by this disorder feel a great deal more anxiety than those without this issue. There is a vast amount of inner tension, they feel on edge, and may not be able to self-calm or modulate their behaviour like others. Over time there comes a neural sensitivity that may appear like their nerves aren’t sheathed and protected like normal nerves. The degree of symptoms and effects are related to their level of nutrition, as higher amounts of the involved nutrients can overcome the binding process, and support better function.

PANDAS is short for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. A child may be diagnosed with PANDAS when:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tic disorder, or both suddenly appear following a streptococcal (strep) infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.

  • The symptoms of OCD or tic symptoms suddenly become worse following a strep infection.

The symptoms are usually dramatic, happen “overnight and out of the blue,” and can include motor or vocal tics or both and obsessions, compulsions, or both. In addition to these symptoms, children may become moody or irritable, experience anxiety attacks, or show concerns about separating from parents or loved ones.

What causes PANDAS?

Strep bacteria are very ancient organisms that survive in the human host by hiding from the immune system as long as possible. They hide themselves by putting molecules on their cell wall so that they look nearly identical to molecules found on the child’s heart, joints, skin, and brain tissues. This hiding is called “molecular mimicry” and allows the strep bacteria to evade detection for a long time.

However, the molecules on the strep bacteria are eventually recognized as foreign to the body and the child’s immune system reacts to the molecules by producing antibodies. Because of the molecular mimicry by the bacteria, the immune system reacts not only to the strep molecules but also to the human host molecules that were mimicked; antibodies “attack” the mimicked molecules in the child’s own tissues. These antibodies that react to both the molecules on the strep bacteria and to similar molecules found on other parts of the body are an example of “cross-reactive” antibodies.

Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and elsewhere have shown that some cross-reactive antibodies target the brain—causing OCD, tics, and the other neuropsychiatric symptoms of PANDAS.

Could an adult develop PANDAS?

PANDAS is considered a paediatric disorder and typically first appears in childhood from age 3 to puberty. Reactions to strep infections are rare after age 12, but researchers recognize that PANDAS could occur, though rarely, among adolescents. It is unlikely that someone would experience these post-strep neuropsychiatric symptoms for the first time as an adult, but it has not been fully studied.

It is possible that adolescents and adults may have immune-mediated OCD, but this is not known.

Signs and Symptoms

How is PANDAS diagnosed?

The diagnosis of PANDAS is a clinical diagnosis, which means that there are no lab tests that can diagnose PANDAS. Instead, health care providers use diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of PANDAS (see below). At the present time, the clinical features of the illness are the only means of determining whether a child might have PANDAS.

The diagnostic criteria are:

  • Presence of OCD, a tic disorder, or both

  • Pediatric onset of symptoms (i.e., age 3 to puberty)

  • Episodic course of symptom severity (see information below)

  • Association with group A Beta-hemolytic strep infection, such as a positive throat culture for strep or history of scarlet fever

  • Association with neurological abnormalities, such as physical hyperactivity or unusual, jerky movements that are not in the child’s control

  • Very abrupt onset or worsening of symptoms

If the symptoms have been present for more than a week, blood tests may be done to document a preceding strep infection.

Are there any other symptoms associated with PANDAS episodes?

Yes. Children with PANDAS often experience one or more of the following symptoms in conjunction with their OCD or tic disorder:

  • Symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), such as hyperactivity, inattention, or fidgeting

  • Separation anxiety (e.g., child is "clingy" and has difficulty separating from his or her caregivers; for example, the child may not want to be in a different room in the house from his or her parents)

  • Mood changes, such as irritability, sadness, or emotional lability (i.e., tendency to laugh or cry unexpectedly at what might seem the wrong moment)

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Nighttime bed-wetting, frequent daytime urination, or both

  • Changes in motor skills, such as changes in handwriting

  • Joint pains

What is an episodic course of symptoms?

Children with PANDAS seem to have dramatic ups and downs in the severity of their OCD and tics. OCD or tics that are almost always present at a relatively consistent level do not represent an episodic course. Many children with OCD or tics have good days and bad days, or even good weeks and bad weeks.

However, children with PANDAS have a very sudden onset or worsening of their symptoms, followed by a slow, gradual improvement. If children with PANDAS get another strep infection, their symptoms suddenly worsen again. The increased symptom severity usually persists for at least several weeks but may last for several months or longer.

Naturopathy & Bioresonance for PANDAS

Holistic therapies such as these have resources that Western Medicine is not yet using. Herbal medicines have a broad spectrum of action in working with the immune system. Uncovering stealth infections is enhanced when Naturopathy is combined with Bioresonance Therapy. Used in medical clinics and hospitals across Europe, Bicom Bioresonance Therapy is a wonderful resource for use in a myriad of conditions, from musculoskeletal to infections. In my experience, Bicom Bioresonance therapy is a highly effective and beneficial tool for both acute and chronic infections, and is ideal for supporting children through the recovery of PANDAS.

Homeopathy & Resonance Remedies - handy medicine for kids of all ages

Ever since German doctor Samuel Hahnemann introduced homeopathy 200 years ago, paediatricians have favoured homeopathic treatment for children across a wide range of conditions including infections, allergies, mental and behavioural disorders, and other miscellaneous disorders (such as headaches and gastritis). But why should homeopathy be the first port of call for the treatment of children?

  • Safe Medicine: Any medicine administered to children should be mild and free from harsh effects, if possible. As their bodies are still developing, interference from harsh drugs – or the development of any kind of conditioning to harsh drugs – can cause problems in the short and long term. Homeopathics are natural and 100% non-toxic. They do not hamper digestion, lower resistance power, or produce allergies – even if taken for long-term.

  • Effective & Quick Treatment: A child’s system is more sensitive than that of an adult and has not been conditioned to harsh drugs and antibiotics. They respond more quickly to homeopathy.

  • Builds Body Resistance: Recurring infection is often due to a lowered resistance power resulting from some other root cause. Homeopathic treatment is based on the ‘Constitutional Approach’: it treats the disease at the root level rather than treating symptoms. This will stand a child in good stead to fight further infections without assistance.

  • Child Friendly: Homeopathics are available in a number of forms, making them easy to administer. They are never bitter and cause no tummy upsets or side effects.  Kids tend to love taking their remedies.

For these reasons, if you want your children to grow with natural, safe, non-toxic, effective and quick acting medicine, investigate these remedies with us here at Healthier By Choice.

Family Health

The health of the family supports the health of the individuals within the family.  What you eat together, the habits you have, filter through to become the habits your children may well adopt across their lifetime.

A family health and wellness program gives us a chance to test each member of the family and then put together an integrated program that supports everyone, streamlined so you can do it together.

A family program begins with an initial consultation first for the the most in-need child, and then for the primary parent, where we will discuss the needs of the family. Together we will put together a family food and nutrient program to best support the health needs of your family.
