Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)
FSM (Frequency-Specific Microcurrent) is a therapeutic approach that uses specific frequencies and microcurrent to target various tissues and conditions in the body, including mental health issues. This technique is based on the principle that different frequencies can resonate with different tissues and cellular processes, potentially promoting healing and symptom relief.

How FSM Works
FSM involves applying low-level electrical currents (in the microampere range) to specific areas of the body using electrodes. The frequencies are chosen specific to the tissue, body part, issue or condition being treated, to uplift and stimulate cellular activity to promote and support the body's natural healing process.

PLEASE NOTE - FSM is still relatively new in the world, with research and case reports dating back to 1990, and the experience of tens of thousands of practitioners up for constant discussion through the Frequency Microcurrent training institute. In writing these notes I am expressing my understanding of this therapy, and what I have experienced in my practice since incorporating into my Naturopathic work. Zero claims are made here, I am simply curious and excited by what I have seen as I work one to one with my clients in the creation of holistic plans attuned to their invidual health needs.
How I use FSM in my Clinic
FSM therapy enables me to target specific tissues and issues, boosting cellular ATP and mitochondrial function, and correcting disharmonic states. Since combining FSM with other therapies, both mainstream and complimentary, I have observed an accelerate healing process in the people I have treated. I have been working in this field for over 25 years, and I have been extremely impressed with this therapy.

Potential for Application of FSM in Mental Health
I would always consider that therapeutic effects are greatly influenced by the practitioner when equipment is used in a clinical setting. These are my thoughts on how FSM might be of value in a complimentary mental health program in my clinic.
-
Easing the intensity of Stress and Anxiety : FSM may help reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety by promoting improved balance in the autonomic nervous system. Specific frequencies can target the nervous system to calm the mind and reduce physiological stress responses. FSM is able to work at the level of the Medulla, which is the brain centre that regulates all autonomic functions, notably the balance between the sympathetic (stress) and parasympathetic (rest, digest, repair) arms of the nervous system. All cranial nerves exit the brain at the Medulla, notably the Vagus Nerve, which is important to regulate the calmer side of autonomic functions, like digestion, deep breathing, and keeping inflammation under control.

Mood Improvement: If we are harmonising areas of the brain associated with mood regulation with frequency language that is calming, FSM may help ease symptoms of depression and other mood disorders by turning up vagal tone and supporting a calmer state of being. Frequencies focused on more balanced neurotransmitter function and reduced inflammation may support a improved mood and cognitive ability.

-
Sleep: In my clinic I use FSM to address sleep disorders through working with the correct frequency pairs to support the brain centres involved in sleep regulation (notably the pineal, hippocampus, medulla and the nervous system in general). I have seen a series of session improve sleep quality and duration in my clients. I do use Nutritional therapy, lifestyle support and herbs in support of this work, and over a month, the results have been noteworthy. Frequencies may be of value in support of melatonin production to help normalize circadian rhythms in those with insomnia or disrupted sleep rhythms.

Pain Management: Chronic pain is definitely the foray of FSM, with much research on this already being done. We know that inflammation and pain can significantly impact mental health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Because FSM can help alleviate pain, including nerve pain, quite quickly and effectively by reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair, it would be a highly valuable support to people facing chronic, severe or acute pain for any cause. It is even successful at treating phantom limb pain, burns pain and scarring, and fibromyalgia. I have been most impressed with this aspect of FSM. https://frequencyspecific.com/paper/low-back-neck-pain-paper-jbmt/ | https://frequencyspecific.com/paper/fibromyalgia-chronic-fatigue-and-multiple-chemical-sensitivities-a-unified-hypothesis/ | https://frequencyspecific.com/paper/frequency-specific-microcurrent-as-adjunctive-therapy-for-three-wounded-warriors/

PANS / PANDAS: Because FSM is so useful for chronic inflammation and supporting the body's repair of damage caused by toxins, pathogens, or a dysregulated immune system, together with it's ability to improve autonomic balance, I have found it very useful in the management of this very complex condition.

-
Depression and Inflammation: Depression has been shown to be associated with dysregulated inflammation. FSM works to reduce inflammation and soothe the nervous system, supporting improved balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic balance. Depression is also increased in people suffering from IBS, SIBO and other gut-mediated issues. FSM can applied to these states also. I have had excellent results with inflammatory bowel disease using FSM with clients.

-
PTSD: Studies have shown that FSM is a highly useful support for those suffering from PTSD from any source.

Naturopathy
Bringing in functional pathology, a thorough holistic health and lifestyle review, nutrition, diet, herbal help and personalised wellbeing support, Naturopathy offers a strong foundation for FSM to work through. See our Mental Health for Kids and Teens page for more detailed information on this.

Sessions
-
Treatment Protocols: FSM treatments are typically tailored to the individual, with specific frequencies chosen based on the person's symptoms and condition.
-
Sessions: Treatment usually involves multiple sessions, 4-10 typically, close together initially. Sessions are 90 minutes.

PTSD
In 2005, a specific two-hour frequency protocol was developed for treating PTSD using Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM). Over the following 14 years, this protocol was successfully utilized by thousands of FSM practitioners without any reported failures or negative side effects. By 2010, data indicated rapid symptom reduction in chronic combat-induced PTSD after just four FSM treatments over four weeks, a notable outcome since improvements are rarely expected when PTSD has persisted for more than two years. The recommended treatment consists of eight sessions over seven weeks, though significant improvements were observed after only half of the recommended sessions, all without the use of nutritional or medication interventions.

Anxiety & Depression
Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) has shown promise in alleviating anxiety symptoms by utilizing specific frequencies to balance the autonomic nervous system and promote relaxation. Clinical reports and studies indicate that FSM can significantly reduce anxiety and lift depression by enhancing cellular energy production, reducing inflammation, and improving overall neurological function. This non-invasive treatment has been reported to be safe and well-tolerated, with no significant side effects. (Frequency Specific Microcurrent).
Brain Injury
Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) may be a useful component in a comprehensive plan for brain injury rehabilitation. Clinical reports have documented dramatic improvements in patients with brain injuries, including notable EEG changes and reductions in symptoms like brain fog and memory deficits. Some studies have shown that FSM can reset brain function and improve autonomic dysregulation, contributing to recovery and symptom relief. This therapeutic approach is often used alongside other treatments, such as speech therapy and nutritional support, to maximize its benefits.
An interesting case report outlines the recovery a young girl who had a PONS stroke and was curled up in limb spasticity. It is heartening to read -

Akathisia & 'Benzo Brain'
Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) therapy has shown potential in aiding recovery from akathisia and benzodiazepine (benzo) withdrawal symptoms, commonly referred to as "benzo brain." FSM utilizes specific frequencies to target neurological and physiological dysfunctions, promoting cellular healing and reducing inflammation. Clinical reports have highlighted FSM's efficacy in alleviating symptoms such as restlessness, agitation, and cognitive impairments associated with akathisia and benzo withdrawal. (Not much is said about the potential for brain damage with long term use of Benzos, but knowing this can important for recovery. )
By working with neuro-regulation and autonomic balance, FSM seeks to support the brain's recovery process. As a non-invasive and well-tolerated therapeutic option, FSM may be a supportive when few other things can help.

Post Surgical Pain & Depression
Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) therapy has shown potential in aiding recovery from surgery. It is highly useful if used before, straight after and in the recovery period, showing great improvements in recovery time for anything from facial surgery to joint replacements, teeth extractions and abdominal surgery.
If healing milestones are not met or post surgical adhesions drive ongoing pain or limitations to movement and recovery, depression, grief and loss can naturally follow. Knowing that FSM can help in this instance can bring great relief to those faced with failed post-recovery progress. It can be applied above and below wound sites, and through casts.

Why use FSM alongside other therapies?
I believe FSM is a promising complementary therapy for mental health issues, offering a non-invasive, complimentary approach to the management of stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, trauma and chronic pain.

In my clinic I find that it makes the brain and body more adaptable through the healing process, and in the case of mental health, improves receptivity and response to other therapies. Since introducing FSM, the recovery process for many of my clients has been shortened and lifted.
