Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I book an FSM session with Monica?
Booking an FSM session with Monica is easy! You can schedule a free 15-minute discovery call by messaging us in the contact form at the bottom of this page. Put in a few times and days that are suitable for you and Monica will book it into the diary and call you at that time. During this call, Monica will discuss your health concerns with you and determine if FSM might be appropriate for you. Monica will then help you book your initial sessions.
  • How much does an FSM session cost?
A Standard Initial appointment is 90 minutes - $235. Complex cases may require a 120 minute session, which are $265. Subsequent sessions are 90 minutes - $220.
  • What should I do to prepare for an FSM session?
Preparing for an FSM session is simple and straightforward. - Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to ensure you can relax during the treatment and to allow easy placement of the electrodes. - Avoid applying lotions, oils, makeup, perfumes and deodorants to the body on the day, as this can interfere with conduction and effectiveness. - You will be sent a questionnaire when your initial appointment is booked. Be sure to list any medications (especially Statins), supplements, or other treatments you’re currently using, as this will inform Monica’s approach. - Let Monica know if you are vaping, smoking, drinking alcohol or on opioids as this may affect your treatment. - It is important to be well-hydrated before your session, as hydration helps your body conduct the frequencies more effectively. - If you have any imaging or tests, send them through before your initial appointment.
  • What happens during my first FSM session?
Your first FSM session with Monica is designed to provide a personalised and thorough introduction to the therapy. The session begins with a detailed case history, where Monica will go through your health concerns, medical history, lifestyle, and goals for treatment. This helps her understand your full health picture and identify the root causes and drivers of your symptoms. Based on this assessment, Monica will write an FSM program tailored to your needs—for example, frequencies to reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, relieve pain, support the adrenals, or repair tissues. During the session, you’ll lie down comfortably while damp electrode pads are placed on your skin to deliver the microcurrents. The currents are subsensory, you won't feel them, but you may feel the effect of them. Treatment lasts 60-90 minutes, and most clients find it deeply relaxing—some even nap! Monica may also provide recommendations on nutrition, supplements, or other therapies that can support your FSM healing journey.
  • How many sessions will I need to see results?
The number of FSM sessions needed varies depending on your specific condition, its severity, and how long you’ve been experiencing it (chronicity). Generally, most clients notice improvements within 4 to 6 sessions. For acute issues, such as a recent injury or post-surgical recovery, you might see benefits in as few as 3 sessions. Chronic conditions, like fibromyalgia or long-standing nerve pain, may require 8 to 12 sessions to achieve significant relief. Monica will assess your progress during each session and adjust the treatment plan as needed. Many clients choose to continue with maintenance sessions (e.g., monthly) after their initial treatment plan to sustain their results and support ongoing wellness.
  • Will I feel the electrical current during FSM treatment?
No, you won’t feel the electrical current during FSM treatment. FSM uses ultra-low microcurrents that are below the sensory threshold, meaning they’re too gentle to be perceived by your nerves. Most people report feeling nothing at all during the session, while others can feel everything that the frequencies are doing to their body's energies and sensations. Most people find the experience deeply restorative and relaxing. Many clients fall asleep during treatment due to the soothing environment and the therapy’s gentle nature. If you do feel any sensation, it’s typically a mild warmth or a slight sensations, which is usually a sign the body is responding positively to the frequencies.
  • What is FSM used for?
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is a versatile therapy that may support recovery from a wide range of conditions. It’s commonly used for chronic pain (such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, or migraines), nerve-related issues (like neuropathy, neuralgia, or shingles), and stress-related disorders (including anxiety, PTSD, and poor sleep). FSM also supports women’s health concerns, such as hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, and post-birth recovery, as well as digestive complaints like IBS, bloating, and leaky gut. It is often used to improve post-surgical healing and adaptation, soften scar tissue and melt aberrant adhesions, making it beneficial for those recovering from surgeries, injuries, and burns. FSM is often used alongside other treatments—like naturopathy, physiotherapy, chiropractic, psychotherapy, or conventional medical care—for a holistic approach to wellness. Many clients also use FSM to enhance overall vitality and support the body’s natural healing processes, even if they don’t have a specific condition.
  • How does FSM work on a scientific level?
FSM works by delivering precise, ultra-low electrical currents (microcurrents) that match the body’s natural frequencies. Every cell and tissue in the body operates at a specific resonant frequency, which can become disrupted by injury, stress, or illness. FSM uses a dual-channel device to deliver two frequencies simultaneously—one to target the condition (e.g., inflammation) and another to target the tissue (e.g., nerves or muscles). This resonance helps restore the body’s natural electrical signaling, promoting healing at a cellular level. For example, FSM has been shown to increase ATP production (cellular energy), improve circulation, reduce inflammatory chemicals like cytokines, and balance the autonomic nervous system. These effects support the body’s ability to repair tissues, reduce pain, and regulate stress responses, making FSM a powerful tool for holistic healing.
  • Is FSM backed by research?
Yes, FSM is supported by clinical case reports, published studies, and decades of practitioner experience. Dr. Carolyn McMakin, the founder of FSM, has documented its efficacy in her book The Resonance Effect and through various case studies, particularly for conditions involving pain, inflammation, and nervous system dysfunction. For example, research has shown FSM can increase ATP production (cellular energy) by up to 500%, which supports faster tissue repair and reduces inflammation. Studies have also demonstrated its effectiveness for fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and nerve-related conditions like neuropathy. Additionally, practitioners worldwide have reported success with FSM for a wide range of issues, from post-surgical scar tissue to stress-related disorders. While more large-scale clinical trials are needed to fully validate FSM’s benefits, the existing evidence and clinical outcomes are promising. Monica can provide more information on specific studies if you’re interested.
  • Is FSM safe for everyone?
Yes, FSM is generally a safe, well-tolerated, and non-invasive therapy that uses sub-sensory electrical currents. It has been used successfully by thousands of clients worldwide with minimal side effects. However, FSM may not be suitable for everyone. It’s not recommended for individuals with pacemakers, defibrillators, or certain implanted medical devices, as the electrical currents could potentially interfere with these devices. Additionally, FSM should be avoided during pregnancy unless specifically cleared by a healthcare provider, due to a lack of extensive research in this area. If you have a serious medical condition, such as cancer or epilepsy, it’s important to consult with your doctor before starting FSM. Monica will review your health history during your first session to ensure FSM is safe and appropriate for you.
  • Can I have FSM while taking medication or seeing other practitioners?
Yes, FSM is safe to use while taking medication or working with other practitioners. In fact, it’s often integrated into a broader treatment plan that includes naturopathy, physiotherapy, counselling, or conventional medical treatments. FSM’s gentle, non-invasive nature makes it compatible with most medications and therapies, as it works by supporting the body’s natural healing mechanisms rather than interfering with other treatments. For example, if you’re taking pain medication or undergoing physiotherapy for an injury, FSM can complement these by reducing inflammation and speeding up tissue repair. Be sure to inform Monica of any medications or treatments you’re currently using, as this will help her tailor the FSM frequencies to your needs.
  • Does FSM replace medical treatment?
No, FSM is not a replacement for medical treatment. It’s a complementary therapy designed to work alongside your existing healthcare plan. FSM does not diagnose or treat medical conditions in the way a registered healthcare provider does; instead, it supports your body’s natural healing processes by addressing underlying imbalances at a cellular level. For example, FSM can help reduce inflammation or pain, but it should be used in conjunction with medical care for conditions requiring diagnosis, medication, or surgery. Monica encourages clients to continue working with their doctors, naturopaths, or other practitioners while using FSM to ensure a comprehensive approach to their health.
  • Are there any side effects or risks associated with FSM?
FSM is generally very safe with minimal side effects, as it’s a non-invasive therapy that uses sub-sensory currents. However, some clients may experience mild, temporary effects as their body adjusts to the treatment. For example, you might feel slight fatigue or a temporary increase in symptoms (like mild soreness) as your body begins to heal—this is often a sign that the therapy is working and is similar to the “healing response” seen in other therapies like massage or acupuncture. These effects typically subside within a day or two. Rarely, if the frequencies are not properly tailored, you might feel a slight tingling or discomfort, but Monica will adjust the settings to ensure your comfort. As mentioned earlier, FSM is not suitable for those with pacemakers or certain implanted devices, and it should be used cautiously during pregnancy or with certain medical conditions—Monica will screen for these during your initial consultation.
